ARTIST STATEMENT AND BIO

ARTIST STATEMENT

The development of my drawing often came on during summer holidays with grandparents within their interesting  environment and locality.  Encouragement from that point was given generously, drawing becoming both a regular and spontaneous activity. Subject matter could be natural or built or human, whatever attracted my eye.  Moving on,'Liathach’, this work (above) portrays grandeur, scale, physicality, a remnant of past geological action. 'The Mountains of Assynt' (below) is a silhouetted giant, with Cul Mor and other peaks, grand and impressive, its mood is in its russet, blue and blue grey colours. See the monumental quality in "Watermill' and many remnant ancient trees in an old oak wood`. The late Roger Deakin, believed that "we carry places and landscapes in our head, that live on in us, wherever we may be, and however far we may be from them". Sometimes other work moves away from definition and into spatial and tonal abstract pieces, maybe as a refreshing contrast to intense work. Watercolour is a medium I truly enjoy as well as drawing but I like to use oils and other media.

YOUR VISIT

I hope you feel the inspiration I experience in the physical environment and the importance that time, place and memory played in its expression.  In 2021 my work featured in the Scottish Womens' Institute magazine and was on show at the Riccio Gallery, Dalkeith in 2022. Currently new work observes the bonds that form and thread through women's lives and navigate around their family and professional lives. As a project I call 'the Joy of Reunion'.
