ARTIST STATEMENT AND BIO

ARTIST STATEMENT

Drawing is the core of my arts practice. Subjects intensely observed, can be abstracted by paring away all to a line, a form, a colour. Each of these can express so much . So it's looking a great deal before drawing.  In 'Liathach' (above) this work portrays grandeur, scale, physicality, a remnant of past geological action. Looking, seeing and then drawing.

In the 'The Mountains of Assynt' (below) is a silhouetted giant, Cul Mor and other peaks in sight. The forms are grand and impressive but the mood is in the colours, simple as blue greys, russets and pale blue. In the study of such dramatic subjects, something remains.

The writer, the late Roger Deakin, stated that "we carry places and landscapes in our head, that live on in us, wherever we may be, and however far we may be from them". Observations find a way to stay with us, down deep internally, can be expressed in many ways and over time emerge in new work.

BIO

My arts practice is based in the Lothians, out from the city that is Edinburgh. I studied at its College of Art, University of Edinburgh to graduate in fine art, and won a summer scholarship to Yale University, USA.  I have tutored students in contextual studies at Gray's School of Art, Robert Gordon's University, and in City and Guilds modules at Aberdeen College , in the wider community and in schools. I exhibit work through a variety of openings and opportunities.

YOUR VISIT

I hope you feel the inspiration I experience in the physical environment and the importance that time, place and memory played in its expression.  In 2021 my work featured in the Scottish Womens' Institute magazine and was on show at the Riccio Gallery, Dalkeith in 2022. Currently new work observes the bonds that form and thread through women's lives and may navigate around their family life and as a project I call 'the Joy of Reunion'.
